Can I use Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition as a stand alone server?

I have a low-transaction system, and I wanted to put SQL Server 2000 personal edition on an XP Pro box as a stand alone system and have other systems on the network look to this box for its database. I’ve read a bunch of Microsoft articles, and it does not say that it restricts personal edition from remote connections, but I have not been able to see the database remotely. I’m using SQL Server authentication, so I shouldn’t need to share any file directories, right? Any advice/ideas would be great.

You’re still going to have to set up a network share, or you’re not going to see it through the network.

I have made a database in sql server 2000 but didnot backup,?

I have made a database in sql server 2000 but didnot backup, later i have to uninstall the sql server and reinstall it. I have the .mdf and .ldf files, can i restore these files in my new sql server. I need it. how to do it??

You can use the Attach commands to accomplish this.

From Microsoft SQL Server Books Online:

In Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000, the data and transaction log files of a database can be detached and then reattached to another server, or even to the same server. Detaching a database removes the database from SQL Server but leaves the database intact within the data and transaction log files that compose the database. These data and transaction log files can then be used to attach the database to any instance of SQL Server, including the server from which the database was detached. This makes the database available in exactly the same state it was in when it was detached.

Detaching and attaching databases is useful if you want to move a database:

From one computer to another without having to re-create the database and then restore the database backup manually.

To a different physical disk, for example, when the disk containing the database file has run out of disk space and you want to expand the existing file rather than add a new file to the database on the other disk.
To move a database, or database file, to another server or disk:

Detach the database.

Move the database file(s) to the other server or disk.

Attach the database specifying the new location of the moved file(s).
When you attach a database, the name and physical location of the primary data file must be specified. The primary file contains the information needed to find the other files comprising the database unless one or more of those files have changed location since the database was detached. Any files that have changed location must be specified in addition to the primary file. Otherwise, SQL Server tries to attach the files based on incorrect file location information stored in the primary file, and the database will not be successfully attached.

If you attach a database to a server other than the server from which the database was detached, and the detached database was enabled for replication, you should run sp_removedbreplication to remove replication from the database. Alternatively, you can remove replication from the database prior to detaching it.

Errors produced while detaching a database may prevent both the database from closing cleanly and the transaction log from being rebuilt. If you receive an error message, perform these corrective actions:

Reattach all files associated with the database, not just the primary file.

Resolve the problem that caused the error message.

Detach the database again.

Can anyone help with a microsoft access to SQL server transfer?

I am trying to bring a database from microsoft access 2007 into SQL server express enterprise 2000. So far I have done moved the data through the SQL server button in Access in the database tools tab. But there is one problem: one of the tables did not go through and it doesn’t give me any reason why. It says it either skiped it or could not transfer it. Please Help. Thanks.
Also how would I bring the tables and forms over into SQL. Basically I need to bring a whole database from Access into SQL. Thanks
Thanks for answering Idea$

- Create a table in SQL 2000 with the same structure as the table you want to import from Access
- Go to Control panel –> Administrative tools –> ODBC and create an ODBC connection for your SQL Server database
- Open the Access database and select “Link tables” from the menu and browse for the ODBC connection you have created, then select the table you have created in SQL Server.
- Now you have a link for the SQL Server table in your Access database, any change you make on it will be directly made on SQL server, all you have left to do is create an insert query in Access to insert the data from the Access table to the linked SQL Server table

DBA (Database Administrators) are always in demand. Only problem is that you cant expect too many promotions. You can rise through different expert levels L0 – L1 – L3
I would recommend starting with Oracle DBA than MsSQL.
Any way SQL Server 2005 Administration is not tough. Around 30-50 hrs of classroom training and couple of months of on the job training (which is imp.) can turn you into a MsSQL dba.

Depending on your skill level, interest and background you will be able to determine which one is easier. If you have some knowledge of Unix you might be able to quickly pickup Linux and may in fact enjoy the user friendly interface that Linux offers. As far as any dba administration, if you want to manage backend operations for a SQL box you need to also understand what role the database actually plays to add value to the process.
Nitin and George are correct you can get it from the Microsoft website.

There technically was no free version of SQL 2000. There was only MSDE 2000 (which is the same thing). It has a 2GB database size cap as well as some other limits. The later express versions have raised that limit to 4GB. If you need a bigger database than that then you will need to purchase a full version.

You can get MSDE 2000 (MSSQL version 8.0),

what do you need MsSQL for?
there is a little program called netserver (100% freeware) that includes a version of SQL.
It is an apache webserver, FTP, and email server as well as having SQL built in.
it is a damn good server suite. if you want to host a website for example.

however try www.softpedia.com and search for MSSQL server although microsoft office has a version of the server built in as do pinnacle TV tuner cards (for the PC) to name just a few.

the only other place to try would be direct from microsoft.com and search for the program.

I hope that helps a little.

my home page is still under construction, but i have a link to netserver on there at the moment see www.garylsmith1973.homeip.net however netserver can also be downloaded direct from softpedia.com with a little bit of searching.
and for the record i only put on my site software that is known to be freeware or trial ware. i do not condone nor encourage breaching anyone copyright.
any software i list is software i use regularly and i find beneficial and that has no known problems.

There are numerous types of parameters but some of the most useful to know are:

1: Selecting All or One item from a list
and

2: Selecting The Year and Month or Year, Month and Week.

The more you plan your reporting system, the less reports you need to write and the less you need to modify.

One reporitng system I was recently involved with had 15 reports but only 5 reports were required.

With parameter driven reporting, you can allow the user to generate their information filtered, sorted or visible in many different ways.

1: Selecting All or one item from a list

First Create a Dataset to return @Parameter1:
SELECT DISTINCT Name FROM Organisations
UNION
SELECT ‘.All’ AS Name
ORDER BY 1

Then the main dataset add to the front IF @Parameter = ‘.All’ SELECT

And after the SQL, add ELSE and repeat the SQL

2: Selecting The Year and Month or Year, Month and Week.

For This a set of Datasets where one is filtered by the other, provides the final Parameters for your main dataset.

Dataset Called Year
select distinct year(date) as Year from vTimes
order by 1 desc

Note how this is sorted in descending order. This is so the latest Year ( parameter) is displayed.
Also note, is one of the columns returned in another dataset is also Year, then Reporting services will return an error. Change the name of the dataset to fix this. E.g. Year1

Dataset Called Month
select distinct month(date) as Month from vTimes
where year(date) = @Year
order by 1 desc

Dataset called Week
select distinct datepart(wk,date) as Week
from vTimes
where year(date) = @StartYear and month(date) = @StartMonth
order by 1 desc

Note how we used the datepart and not the datename function as this doesnÂ’t sort the Weeks properly.

select enterprise manager
collapse the microsoft sql servers
then collapse sql server group
choose your database name
select your database and right-click on it
select all tasks
choose backup database option
you will see database name
then bellow that there will be destimation
click on add button and select where to put you backup file
click the button which has the 3dots on it and input the file name that you want to save your backup file with

good luck

I’m not sure what you’re asking. You have a new installation of SQL 2000. Naturally, none of your older databases exist on this installation. If you have a copy of the .bak file for the database you want to restore, you should be able to restore it to this new installation. You can either create an empty database with the right db name in the new installation and restore to it. Or you can do the restore action with the wizard in Enterprise Manager and give it the right db name in one of the last steps without creating the new db first.

If you are saying that you don’t have a copy of the .bak file, and you don’t still have the db online on a different server… you’re up the creek. Do you have backup tapes with a copy of the .bak file anywhere?

Put this in a .SQL file and schedule it to run:

BACKUP DATABASE [mydbname] TO DISK = N’C:\mypath\mydbname.bak’ WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N’mydbname-Full Database Backup’, SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
GO

Of course, change every instance of “mydbname” with your database name. And change “mypath” to the local file path where you want to save it to.

How to automate backup and restore in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, with or without third party?

Well, that depends… If you have one of the versions you buy, then you have Enterprise Manager. In Enterprise Manager, expand your server in the server list, go to “Management”, expand “Management” and go to “Database Maintenance Plans”. Right click and select “New Maintenance Plan” and a wizard will walk you through the process. To restore, just right click on the database (in Enterprise manager in the databases folder) and select “all tasks” and then “restore database”. Select your database backup and off you go.

If you are using MSDE (the free sql server version) it gets more complicated. You can get a copy of Enterprise Manager from a trial version of SQL Server from the microsoft website or you can use the osql utility that comes with MSDE.

You can download “SQL Server Books Online” for more info (www.microsoft.com/sql)

SQL Server is picky like that.

Right click the DB, select restore. Then pick the backup file choice and pick the file. Change to the other tab, there is a checkbox for forcing the restore. It will also show you the name and path for the MDF and LDF files. Just make sure it has the new name and path because these are prefilled based on the contents of the backup file itself.

That’s all you need to do.

It depends on how you saved the backup. If it’s just the files themselves, you’ll have to import them into a database program that can import from SQL Server 2000. If not, you’ll need a database that can read the format you saved in.

1) The Same Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 Database Engine Operates On Microsoft Windows® 2000 Professional, Microso

The same Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 database engine operates on Microsoft Windows® 2000 Professional, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition. It also runs on all editions of Microsoft Windows NT® version 4.0. The database engine is a robust server that can manage terabyte-sized databases accessed by thousands of users. Additionally, when running at its default settings, SQL Server 2000 has features such as dynamic self-tuning that let it work effectively on laptops and desktops without burdening users with administrative tasks. SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition extends the SQL Server 2000 programming model to mobile Windows CE devices and is easily integrated into SQL Server 2000 environments.

SQL Server 2000 works with Windows NT and Windows 2000 failover clustering to support immediate failover to a backup server in continuous operation. SQL Server 2000 also introduces log shipping, which allows you to maintain a warm standby server in environments with lower availability requirements.

Same Server Across Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition Platforms
The same programming model is shared in all environments, because the SQL Server 2000 database engine runs on Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Server, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition.

In general, an application written for an instance of SQL Server 2000 operating in one environment works on any other instance of SQL Server 2000. The Microsoft Search service is not available on the Windows NT Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows 98 operating systems. SQL Server databases on those platforms do not support full-text catalogs and indexes. Applications running on these operating systems can, however, make use of the full-text capabilities if they connect to an instance of SQL Server 2000 on a different computer that supports them.

The differences in the behavior of SQL Server 2000 when running on the different operating systems are due mainly to features not supported by Windows Millennium Edition or Windows 98. Generally, these features, such as asynchronous I/O and scatter/gather I/O, do not affect the data or responses given to applications. They just prevent instances of SQL Server running on Windows Millennium or Windows 98 from supporting the same levels of performance as are possible for instances of SQL Server on Windows NT or Windows 2000. Instances of SQL Server on Windows Millennium Edition or Windows 98, however, do not support failover clustering and cannot publish transactional replications.
