I want to be a system administrator. I was about to learn SQL Server 2005 and Windows Server 2003 and obtain an MCP for both. But now many people advised me to learn Linux and Msql too. My goal is 1 year of learning before may apply. Can I really learn so much? Windows (SQL Server Win03) and some Linux and Mysql? I think it might be too much for me. I am 10 years PC exp [erience as a hobby, but never got a title or cert. I am 46 years old. Thx.
If you have a year, this is what I recommend. I guess you have experience Windows, at least as an end user. Installing Linux and start playing with it. Installing MySQL, and learn MySQL (on Linux), but make sure you have a good basis SQL as a language. This means you can take your knowledge of SQL you have earned and using MySQL to MS SQL. Much of it is common. Once you have a good base SQL, you can fill the gaps in their knowledge that are specific to the platform - for example, load balancing techniques for MySQL and MS SQL are different. If you going to be an IT professional who is having a hell of a lot of work, but it is very possible given self-discipline. Learning Linux - which gives a better view of how operating systems, such as network interfaces work, how the software works .... It is worth knowing, because it is big business now. On the other hand, so is Microsoft. I get the title 2003 Server and only familiar with MS SQL. You can run MySQL on Windows but not MS SQL on Linux. MySQL has been more useful to me at least. The age does not matter - you're never too old.
